Self Portrait Photography Portfolio

My interest in photography was sparked toward the end of 2021 when I discovered Kimberley Douglas (@kihmberlie) on Instagram. After struggling to find work in the modeling industry, she began to take self portraits and in my opinion, they have only gotten more and more elaborate as time has gone on. She builds intricate and innovative sets and uses a tripod and timer to be both the photographer and subject. After spending a great amount of time scrolling her social media pages, I thought to myself… “I can do this.”

So, I did it. I sketched out an idea in my head, set a schedule, acquired all the necessary materials, and in April 2022, I built a set in my kitchen, set up lighting, and took some photos with my phone. I started completing a monthly photoshoot with my phone for awhile until life kicked my ass so I paused for awhile.

I bought a camera, a Canon T7i, toward the end of 2022 though I still primarily used my phone while I learned how to use a camera for photography. I always thought photography would be so easy; “who can’t use a camera?” I’d think. But really getting into it has been like opening a can of worms; when I learn one thing, it’s like 5 more things come along with it. Since the start of 2024, I’ve been solely using my camera for photography and using my phone to catch behind the scenes content.

I have a long way to go. Photography is not my end goal but it’s an important skill I’d like to master along the way. I have a lot of ideas and though I’m not sure what my ultimate goal is, for the first time in my life, I can say I’m enjoying the journey.

Below is the portfolio I’ve compiled of self portraits. I’m proud of this work and the growth I’m seeing from the beginning to the present. Click the images to be directed to webpages with more photos and details of each shoot.
