‘70s Inspired Photoshoot | April 2022

The ‘70s inspired self portrait shoot was the one that kicked things off for me. I don’t remember why I went with this theme; I’m a big ‘That ‘70s Show’ fan, and I wanted to wear my shirt in some photos plus the curls were poppin’ like a pseudo ‘fro at the time.

I came up with two backdrop ideas. First, I bought flower cut outs from Amazon and spray painted them the colors I wanted. I taped them onto my kitchen wall; at the time, that was the only wall with no windows, shelves, or heavy furniture in front of it in my house. The second idea was based on a design I saw while looking for ‘70s inspo. I wanted a huge swirly design using the same colors as the flowers. I taped 6 20”x30” posterboards together and then covered them with paper for an even painting surface. I started with acrylic paint but I didn’t have enough for the size of the backdrop so I switched to spray paint… which solved the size problem but then the spray paint started dripping. I hated it, but this was the first time I realized not everything goes 100% to plan when doing creative projects. I didn’t love how it turned out, but I still clipped it to my backdrop stand and took photos in front of it anyway!

April 2020 was my introduction to the world of photography… on a very small scale; I didn’t even own a camera yet. These photos were taken on my iPhone 13 Pro Max. I edited them right on my phone using Photoshop Express. I played with a ton of random filters and effects as I introduced myself to the app. Most of the edits were blemish touch ups because I barely understood photo composition.

I still love how they came out. I’ll be re-doing the ‘70s theme in April 2024. Stay tuned!
